RoboLab 1(Initial ideas)
The Task and Ideas
We watched the movie "Ex-machina" and were asked to make a game with similar themes to the movie. We were also put into groups of 4.
We discussed a few ideas of genre before flushing out mechanics. We thought of a robot assembly game where the player drags assets onto a robot manikin and based on the components they used they could be given a score. We thought of maybe a dungeon crawler including characters from the movie trying to escape the lab after the film ended. Both of these seemed okay but not quite what we want.
So we came up with a micro- management game similar to Theme Hospital or Clash of clans. The idea was that the player is running a robot construction and testing centre, that has rooms generating resources, that makes new robots, sells them to corporations to make money and use that money to build more advanced rooms and also introduced a morality system in the "Mid game" which was affected by the player making robots for war or robots that help the environment and natural world, and in the end game the player could make a special robot based on the moral value, to add replay ability.
